Historic Hutchinson House B&B
Farmer's Seed and Nursery was also no stranger to early gardening success. Established in 1888, thrifty German-American farmers settled in the southern part of Minnesota, which had become known for its agricultural activity. A catalog in the German language was distributed to 10,000 farmers in Minnesota and Wisconsin and specialized in pasture grasses, clovers, seed grains and corn seed. A second catalog was later published in English, and the circulation grew to 20,000. Over 125 years later, the company mails out 20 million catalogs to all types of gardeners in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The Farmer's Seed name and business has grown even more with the addition of a website about 10 years ago. Today, in addition to the catalog production facility, Farmer's Seed and Nursery offers a wide range of quality seeds, bulbs, gardening plants, fruits and vegetables and supplies to gardening enthusiasts.
And then, there's Donahue's Greenhouse. Specializing in clematis for several decades, they grow and ship over 700,000 clematis annually. You most likely will find their products at your local garden center and greenhouse, as they ship throughout the United States and Canada. Donahue's also operates a large retail store that is open mid-April through most of June featuring over 25,000 square feet of indoor retail space to shop a wide variety of annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, tropicals, succulents and more. They are known as a true destination garden center complete with a spring opening celebration called ‘Potting Days,’ an event that draws gardeners from all over the region for a 3-day custom planting extravaganza.
